He is widely recognized for his work across Afrobeat, R&B, soul, blues, jazz, and Igbo traditional music, and for providing the emotional backbone of numerous Nigerian music releases through live instrumentation and production. CJ Obassey is the son of late Nigerian gospel music pioneer Reverend Patty Obassey, a legacy that deeply shapes his musical philosophy, discipline, and creative depth.
Born and raised in a musically inclined, ministry-driven household, CJ Obassey’s earliest exposure to music came through church services, rehearsals, and live ministrations across Nigeria. His upbringing emphasized discipline, performance excellence, and spiritual expression through music, laying the foundation for his understanding of music as both a technical craft and a storytelling medium. In October 2012, CJ lost his father at the age of 11, a defining moment that would later influence his emotional depth, introspection, and artistic direction.
